A top to bottom renovation of an existing 19th century double fronted timber house with attached brick stables, the Canning Street project is an exercise in integrating contemporary architecture into a heritage context and in packing a lot into a tight site, providing 4 bedrooms, 2 living spaces, 2 bathrooms and laundry all arranged around the central kitchen and meals room.
On a confined site, the design is driven by the need to maximise access to light, and external space. The focal point of the design and of family life is the large central kitchen table, the centre piece of the contemporary farm style kitchen, which opens up to the paved courtyard and garden via a large sliding door.
Trellis and creeper shades the interior in summer, the colour scheme refers to the local football team, and the transparent roof of the coloured canopy provides shelter and dramatic lighting effects. The traditional Victorian style front verandah is used as additional living space in good weather.
