A new house for a concreter and his young family on a dramatic site near Olivers Hill in Frankston. Overlooking the bay, the house responds to the steep site with a powerful wedge shaped form, clad in dark burnt timber and bisected on the south by the translucent cylinder of the stair tower.
Stepping down the site are a series of balconies, decks and terraces, providing access to open space in all 3 levels, and spectacular views of the bay. On the north timber slatted screens shade the windows and the pool.
Seen from the Nepean highway at the base of the hill, the De Maria house, the house will appear to hover over the landscape, while from the curve of Olivers Hill the house will be a dramatic feature. The burnt timber cladding is a response to the fire charred landscape of southern Australia, and at night, the translucent stair tower will form a landmark in the darkness.
