A low carbon "co-generation" power station built for Places Victoria as part if its urban renewal project for central Dandenong, the PEP houses 2 gas fired generators as well as heat exchangers which capture the waste heat from the generators and allow hot water to be pumped around the precinct, providing hot water, heating and cooling to the new buildings in the area. This allows the PEP to deliver peak load electricity and heat energy at twice the efficiency of a conventional gas fired power station.
The building aims to provide a striking focal point for the urban renewal precinct and employs dramatic form, ambiguous graphics and giant "super-graphics" in the form of huge power points and light switches to engage the public and to invite further investigation.
The PEP was short listed in the Sustainable Category for the AIA Victorian Architecture Awards 2014.
